A 9/11 Perspective
By MADISON CAPUTO
The September 11th terrorist attacks that occurred in 2001 had a series of planes hijacked and suicide attacks. The tragic event was organized by 19 men who were associated with the Islamic terrorist group; Al-Queda. They were from Saudi Arabia. They planned these attacks against the United States. A horrible man named Osama Bin Laden was the leader of the group. There were two planes flown into the Twin Towers in NYC, one flown into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, and a fourth plane that crashed into a field in Pennsylvania. There were about 3,000 people brutally killed in these attacks. Some of these terrorist had lived in the United States for over a year taking American Commercial flying lessons at a flight school. At 7pm later that night, President George W. Bush (was in Florida during the time of the attacks) was spending his whole day going around the country for security concerns and eventually returned to the White House.
MC: I am Madison Caputo and I am going to be interviewing my father who is 56 years old. He drove into New York City for many many years for work. We are going to be speaking on 9/11 from my fathers point of view when the attacks happened.
MC: Where were you when the attacks took place?
SC: I was in my office in Mendham, NJ watching it all on tv.
MC: You found out from the television?
SC: Yes, I found out from the television.
MC: What do you remember seeing and hearing about the 9/11 attacks?
SC: I remember hearing a lot of confusion in the beginning. They had pictures of the towers in NYC with planes directly going into the towers like explosions. Nobody knew what was going on until about an hour after that happened.
MC: What were your first foremost impressions of the 9/11 attacks?
SC: I thought it was horrible and I was basically in shock that someone could do this in/to our country.
MC: About, how long after the attacks happened did you find out about them? SC: It was about 1-2 hours afterwards that we started to figure out what was going on.
MC: After you found out about the two planes crashing, did you expect there to be more attacks/one failed attack?
SC: I didn’t know what to expect at that point. I just thought there could be other problems, but just didn’t know what they would be.
MC: When you were watching tv, how many news stations were going crazy about it and non stop showing the tragic event?
SC: At least nine to ten stations for 24 hours a day.
MC: What were you thinking after the last attack happened? What did you think was going on before they officially said it was a terrorist attack?
SC: At that point after the last plane went down, it was what was going to happen next. That was the whole thing, nobody knew if there was anything at that point. After we found out that it was a terrorist attack, that all those planes were hijacked… There were still thoughts about other planes in the air that were not responding to the control towers and going to crash into buildings. At that point, there was a lot of uncertainty.
MC: What did you and your business partners say… did you guys talk when it happened.. did you make some phone calls?
SC: My business partner was stuck in London and could not get back to the US for about a week and it was pretty scary.
